Hi everyone,

I know I haven't been doing a great job of posting on this blog but I do appreciate all the visitors and everyone letting me know that the music links no longer work. Due to DivShare's hosting/membership rules/fees, I decided to leave this space and try another platform.

I'm in the process of trying to revive the blog since I lost a lot of the tracks that I stored on DivShare. It's been very frustrating trying to unearth the original sound files from old hard drives and I'm sad to say there are some that are probably long gone. So please be patient with me while my Wife gets the new blog space up and running again.

Doomed On Planet Earth 7" Mercenaries/Heart Attack (BTCP Records 1982)

This Philly 2 sider has been on a constant rotation since procured several months back. I always wonder what some of these bands were into way back when that inspired them to produce such ahead of the curve music. Both tracks on this one have that razor sharp art damage guitar tone mixed with a great vocal effort switching from male to female for each side. Mercenaries has a kinda desperate nervous feel to it mixed with a catchy Farfisa organ that works very well with the tune. Heart Attack sounds like it could pass for something Lili Z would have done earlier this decade. Great vocals with bombastic guitar and drumming. Promotional matchbooks exist that originally came with the record but my copy unfortunetly did not.

The Eight Balls 7" Science Gone Too Far/When The Spirit Moves Me (Underdog Records 1984)

With 2013 coming to a close, I figure I should squeeze in one more post before the year is up. This has been a great but busy year which has really slowed down some of my record activities, especially with my blogging. I recently got married to my girlfriend of 9 years and made some pretty great scores with records on the side. This was one of the more surprising records that I came across this past year. It came to me by another collector friend who also hooked me up with my first copy of Crash Street Kidds a few years back. I had never heard or seen this but by first look, I was sold. The Eight Balls were from Youngstown, Ohio and put out this one and only 7" in 1984 to the tune of 500 copies. They still get together a couple of times of year when all members are in town to do reunion shows. I really love the off kilter lyrics and keyboard on the song "Science Gone Too Far". My buddy Clay mention a certain B-52 vibes which I can hear a little."When The Spirit Moves" is more of a straight foreword power pop tune which, is pretty damn good. I could hear the Registrators or a number of other Japanese garage punk bands from the 90's covering it. Here's to the end of 2013! May 2014 be filled with endless record scores and rivers of coffee.

The Molotov Cocktail Party 3 Song 7" (Rare Records 1986)

Well, it's been quite a while. This is actually my first post of 2013 which makes me feel both incredibly lazy and that this year is rolling by a little too fast already. It's been a good year for records so far. This one was acquired not too long ago after I was hipped to it by one of the record slingers at Rockaway Records in Los Angeles. I haven't been able to find any info on it and the guys at Rockaway had nothing on it either. Based off the hub info, it was released in 1986 and came out of the UK. The copy from Rockaway had a stamped dust sleeve but unfortunately my copy is missing it. Musically, it's not really breaking any new ground, just early 80's sounding melodic Punk. I would have guessed they hailed from Southern California based on just listening to it. I would not have guessed it was released in 1986 or that it came from the UK. That's more or less part of the appeal of this record for me. It seems like the late 80's pool of records that sound like early 80's or late 70's releases have not been picked to death which means you can still find under-the-radar gems such as this one. Of the 3 songs, "I'm So Beautiful'" is the stand out track to me. Just a good short straight forward melodic punk tune. "White Flag" is decent and "Last Man On Earth" is probably my least favorite. It's not terrible; it's just not my cup of tea. With any luck, someone will chime in on this one and give me the details. Now grab a chair and enjoy the next six minutes and five seconds of this platter.

The Tweenagers 7" California Clones/Brown Cal Sun (Hollywood Records 1980)

  Oh, the joy of living in California. Love it or hate it, I have called it home for my entire life. For all the sunshine and fun, it has more than it's fare share problems. A couple of those problems were perfectly addressed on this seldom seen 2 sider. The Tweenagers put out this one and only 7" in 1980 on Hollywood records and then seemed to disappear. The little info I have on it is that Johnny Forever was a member and that either most of these were junked or someone is sitting on a box of them somewhere. Either way, not many of these are floating around out there. Both sides are undeniably catchy and well recorded. These songs bring to mind another great California band from the same period, The Shock. They have a similar style of writing in that they have a very balanced blend of melody, power, and spite. In my internet digging I did find this page that has a little info on the band http://www.qm21.com/mystical30.html It seems they played around at the right places. Too bad there's not more info out there on them.

Twisted Value 5 Song 7" (Weasel Records 1985)

I've been sitting on this one for a while now but work and moving have taken up the majority of my spare time from doing too much with records. The neglect has been driving me crazy but I finally have a break which means catching up on recent acquisitions and getting reacquainted with some old standbys like this one. Now, I'm not a big fan of their name because it sounds like a modern day Nu Metal band, to me at least, but their sound couldn't be farther from that. Twisted Value released this one and only 7" in 1985 out of  Fort Wayne Indiana. Their location surprised me a bit as I would have guessed they were from the East Coast, maybe Florida based off their sound. That just makes me like the record even more knowing that they were from what was most likely a non existent scene. I really don't know much else about the record or band other than an insert exists which unfortunately my copy is missing. Out of the 5 songs, H20 is my favorite. The crude lyrics and fuzzed out guitar really put it over for me. The song is about turning your faucet on and having shit pour out instead of water. Ya, I know, who hasn't had that happen to them? The song I'm Sick Of You is a close 2nd with a nice mellow intro which quickly turns into a blown out assault lyrically and musically. For some reason, I have a feeling the band may have been a one off studio job. Hopefully, this post will fish out some much needed info and maybe even that insert for me.

Unabombers 7" 6 Minutes Of Hell (Hellbound Records 1996)

Without even hearing this one, the cover makes it an instant buy. An oversize envelope sleeve with a crude silk screen job has always been a tempting combination for picking up a record that you've never heard. It can also backfire and turn out to be a bad Emo/Screamo record as the 90's were known for churning out. During that period of the 90's, the whole DIY/Emo/Ebulition records thing was kicked into full gear. I'm not necessarily saying that that was a bad thing. There were just a lot of records being pumped out with numerous micro scenes trying to stake their claim in that scene as well. In short, an over abundance of mediocre to shitty records were floating around. Fortunately, this record was far from that. The Unabombers were a short lived (About 7 months) Washington band that did one U.S. tour and one record. 500 were pressed, but only 200 came with a booklet and all were on red vinyl. The record itself is a relentless 6 song noisy, hateful,rager that never lets up. Pick your King era, Poison Idea comes to mind when describing their sound. When the Unabombers called it a day, guitarist Nate Manning and guitarist Gabe, resurfaced in the Murder City Devils where they have gone on to find fame and fortune.

The Terrorists 7" Crazy Life/Cry Girl Cry (Rorschach Records 1981)

Howdy everyone, it's been a while. I'd like to start 2012 with my best score of 2011. This 2 songer was quite headache inducing for me ever since I caught wind of it's existence a few years ago. Outside of a couple of folks around Bakersfield, the only other mention of the record that I had heard of was from collector great, Johan Kugelburg, on one of his blog posts. It has flown way below the radar of most collectors due to the simple fact that almost all of the records were thrown away by a band member. Coincidentally, another Bakersfield band and KBD alumni, The Lizerds, had the majority of their record pressing tossed out by a band member as well. Dumping their records wasn't the only thing these two bands had in common as the guitar player of the Lizerds also played on the Terrorists 7". Before I got the low down on the record, I questioned rather or not it even existed. After speaking with a couple of people who were involved in the scene back then and getting conformation that the record did really exist, I felt that getting a copy of my own was a pipe dream. The pressing info that was given to me was that a cringe inducing 107 copies were pressed to which 20 copies were sent to Rough Trade records in San Francisco, while a few copies were given away around town and some tossed out at a show only to be broken and thrown back at the band. Around 1985, a band member threw out the remaining press of between 70 to 80 copies. Out of the 2 songs, Crazy Life is my favorite. In a nut shell, if the guitar player of the Endtables joined the Grim/Klone Band and they dropped the drummer for Metal Urbain's drum machine I think it would sound like Crazy Life. The flip, Cry Girl Cry, falls somewhere between the Minutemen and Pere Ubu with it's bouncing base line and scratchy guitar skronk. Enjoy!

The Crash Street Kidds 7" Sweet Sally/I Don't Love You Anymore (Self Released 1977)

This 2 songer was unearthed here in Bakersfield a few years ago and I still know nothing about it's origin except for the obvious. I do know that they are not the Minnesota band with the same name who released the "Little Girls" LP in 1982. I'm guessing they got their name from a Mott The Hoople song since the spelling is the same. The A-side is a catchy Power Pop number with Glam overtones that shows the band had chops. The solid drumming and vocal harmonies really stand out on this one. The B-side is a slower Beatles esque ballad with, again, great harmonizing vocals. There is no address on this thing and only 3 last names for the writing credits. I've Googled this thing to death and have found nothing.

UPDATE: With the help of Brian Devereux, members of the Crash Street Kidds have been contacted and their story has finally been unearthed. A big thanks goes to Brian, and band members Dave Warnke and Joey Sparks for the info and photos. CSK were from Porterville California which is a small town between Bakersfield and Fresno. The earliest line up of the band started in 1972 with Dave Warnke and Jeff Gilliam. By 1975 Joey Sparks joined on Bass and Brent Annestad took over on drums which would end up being the line up that recorded the 7". The band gigged around central California mainly playing parties, dances, small clubs and bars. The guys were very into Glam which is pretty obvious by their name but during the mid to late 70's, people around Central California weren't interested in hearing that kind of music. The guys would do covers by everyone from Alice Cooper to the Doobie Brothers, mainly to keep the local yokel satisfied but would also manage to slip in New York Dolls and Velvet Underground covers as well as their own tunes. In 1977 they booked themselves time at a recording studio in Fresno where they laid down the 2 tracks that would make up their one and only release. They sold their records at shows and anywhere else they could. The record was well received and even made it to local radio. The band continued playing up until 1980 and even recorded 2 more songs that they never released which I have uploaded for your listening pleasure. They played their last show on March 8th 1980 at a club in Porterville.

Anti-Band LP "Only Album" (Zebian Records 1983)

Well, I finally broke down and decided to post an LP instead of a 7" for once. If you're like me and become short on patience when it comes to checking out music via the web don't worry, this thing is over before you know it and is killer from start to finish. Anti-Band hailed from Los Angeles, CA and had released a 3 song 7" on Zebian the year before this LP came out. The 7" songs also appear on the LP but I'm not sure if they're the same versions. The LP cover is a total DIY job with a hand stamp front cover and what looks like a paste-on insert on the back. Speaking of DIY, Zebian was also responsible for the DIY Album compilation which included Black Flag, Red Rockers, The Slickee Boys etc. The pressing info on this one is a bit hazy, somewhere between 300-500 copies. I know they don't pop up much.

TBA 7" (Self-Released 1985)

July is here so that means Bako has officially turned into a burning hell. Staying in doors and spinning records will be on the agenda for this weekend as well as throwing up this next post. TBA were 3 youngins from DC that gave us this one and only 7" (300 pressed) way back in 1985. DC had been laying the ground work for Hardcore and post Hardcore for several years by 1985, but it seems as if their home town's musical legacy practically had no influence on them. At first listen, one would assume that they called Southern California home and were into bands like Rhino 39 or the Simpletones. Not too many bands around the DC area at that time were singing songs about the beach, girls, and buying booze with a fake I.D. These guys had chops and also a very creative way of making sleeves for their 7". This thing is very cleverly folded and houses one of the best band photos you could ever ask for. I should also mention that Don Zientara engineered this so if his Minor Threat, Government Issue, Faith, Fugazi etc., credits aren't enough, he'll always have the TBA 7" to back him up.

At first glance, this sleeve screams private press metal. That assumption quickly fades as soon as you drop the needle and you hear an outstanding artpunk record come spewing through your speakers. Xmas Eve hailed from El Sobrante, California which is in the East Bay not too far from Berkeley. These guys played around the usual venues like Mabuhay Gardens, Berkeley Square, etc but failed to become a household name like some of the other bands they shared bills with or that were playing those same venues at that time. To my knowledge, this was their only release. They later formed the band Yo which is similar in sound, but Xmas Eve sat more on the punk side of the fence.

Thee Katatonix 7" (Dud Spud 1983)

Welcome to the 1st post of 2011. It's been freakishly cold here in Bako over the past couple of months which to me, is great. Summer will be here before we know it and with that comes the hellish heat that plagues the majority of Central California. Also during these past couple of months, I've had a decent run with scoring records and this next one was scored during that time. I had been on the hunt for Thee Katatonix 7" ever since I found out about it through an aborted comp entitled "Hooked On Junk" which the song Basket Case was to appear on. There were only 500 pressed and all had blank hubs do to an error at the pressing plant so the band ended up hand labeling each one. These guys were from Laurel, Maryland but by their sound I would have guessed either Boston or New York. They have that scuzzy almost glam tone which brings to mind The Heartbreakers or something that Whiplash records would have released. They extended their line up to a four piece and played through the 80's. During that time they released another 7" plus an LP and one sided 12" which all had more of a slower psych sound.

Aerosol Species 7" Chick Revolt/Ghetto Blasta (Self Released 1999)

Here's another impulse buy that paid off. Based on the description of the record by the seller and the price, it was another no brainer. I know next to nothing about it except that it was released in 1999 by the band and it would please folks that take to labels such as S.S. or Siltbreeze which, I include myself as one of those. The sleeve art was done by underground comic icon S. Clay Wilson. 2 noisy tracks of trashcan spazz punk that will leave you wanting more or at least wanting to know who the hell these guys were. I know I do.

Vex 4 Song 7" (Stolen Records 1984)

Here's one that was a bit late in the game but a ripper none the less. Vex were from Macon Georgia and probably the only good thing that came from there, musically speaking. While Atlanta has had the glory of producing such great bands as Swimming Pool Q's, Neon Christ, Kris Meth And The Mistakes, it was the town of Macon which is also known as the "Heart Of Georgia" that produced one of the states best in my humble opinion. I haven't seen or heard much talk of this one, which is a shame cause there's not a bad song on the thing. Vex had all the charm, chops, and synth racket of Dow Jones and The Industrials along with plenty of spite as you can hear in the tune My Wave which is my favorite track on here. Great band, great record, cool sleeve, what more could you want?

Iranian Homos 7" (Self Released 2010)

Howdy, it's been a while. Work and laziness has postponed me updating so here goes 3 newbies to make up for lost time. Now With the state of the world today, especially the middle east, what would be more appropriate than another offensive punk record that came out of god knows where? This nasty lil sucker rivals Roach Motel and Aryan Disgrace in the bad taste lyric department which will certainly not get them any points with the MRR crowd but, I'm sure they're not too worried about that. 200 one sided copies pressed with a few on red. Here is 2 from this 5 songer. Find one before they're banned and burned.

R.A.F. 7" Echoes Of A Slamming Door/Cherry Blossom (Whiplash Records 1980)

Whiplash records, in it's short time, put out a nice little handful of singles that mostly concentrated on the New York scene except for 3 releases that came out of Connecticut, this being one from there. When it arrived in the mail it came with a nice little surprise in the form of a sleeve. This release was originally issued with no sleeve, so naturally my curiosity grew and I contacted Justin over at the Collectorscum site for help and he didn't let me down as he got in touch with Whiplash head honcho Andy Doback and he gave us the scoop on this elusive sleeve.

From Andy Doback:
"We never had an official pic sleeve for the RAF single. The sleeve in your email was done privately in the late 1980s by a French friend of ours called Morpho. His dad owned a printing shop in Paris where Morpho worked. He designed this sleeve and printed about 25 - he gave them to a few friends & I got about 10 for Rick, some of our friends, and me. He did a nice job. Unfortunately, Morpho died a few years ago - he had diabetes. He was a good friend of Eric & Pascal of the Holy Curse."

Rael Rean 7" Adjust-A-Girl/A To V/Weakdays 7" (Flying Bomb Records 2002)

This was one of those blindly bought records based on it's cover in hope of it being something tasty. There is nothing better than picking up a record with a tame or unsuspecting sleeve and finding out that it was merely the bands way of throwing you off or baiting people like myself that will buy a record based on how ridiculous or in bad taste it looks. The payoffs are never in the same numbers as the strike outs but, that's part of the fun and gamble I suppose. I didn't notice at first that the great Flying Bomb records had put this one out or the buy would have been a no brainer as that label has unleashed a slew of killer releases by, Baseball Furies, The Hunches, The Dirtbombs, The Kill-A-Watts, The Blowtops etc. Rael Rean gravitated more towards what some may call Art Punk but they also had a certain pop sensibility to their tunes that makes it tough to shake this record out of your head. Other than this fine 3 songer which, apparently, I forgot to post the third song so that should be incentive enough to track down a copy of this sucker for yourself, they had a track on a comp of all Ann Arbor MI bands, that's where they were from, and a CD EP which, I would really like to get a copy of so if anyone out there is holding, drop me a line. This one goes out to all the hit's, misses, and the hunt itself.

Seditionaries 7" - Wherewolf / Shapes (Rabid Records 1982)

I'm just gonna come out and say that I don't know a whole lot about this one so if someone does, please fill me in. I do know that they were from California, most likely Southern, and that this was their only release. Wherewolf is a great Horror Punk number that would fit nicely in comparison to TSOL or Bakersfield's own Burning Image. Some may even say the Misfits which I could agree with, they even went as far as to put the Crimson Ghost image on the hub of their 7". The flip has a great cover of the Yarbirds tune Shapes which kinda steal's the show for me on this one. Enjoy!

Bored to Death - 6 Song 7" (Recess Records 1994)

This one has been near and dear to me ever since I picked it up many a moon ago. Bored To Death were a group of youngins out of Phoenix Arizona that happen to spit out one of my favorite 7"s from the 90's. In the mid to late 90's, FYP would play here in Bakersfield on a fairly regular basis. Those shows were a lot of fun plus I always knew that they would bring a good amount of Recess releases and distro goods. At that time I would buy just about any 7" recess would put out, Yah Mos (Great Record), Pud, Les Turds, Sheep Squeeze even Second Hand. The Bored To Death 7" had a much bleaker feel and sound compared to the other Recess releases which is probably my favorite thing about it. Kids hating life and where they live has typically been a good formula for a punk record and this one is no exception. 2 versions of this record excists which has always confused me do to the info being the same on both as saying 1st press 500. The orange cover with black vinyl version was miss labled as Garden Weasel on one side which oddly enough was Recess records release #3. The other side has a white hub and is hand decroated. Any pressing info would be greatly appreciated as well as any info as to whatever happened to these guys. This 7" and a track on the 7" comp Play At You Own Risk Vol 1 is all they to the world.
